Kern County

The Bakersfield, California, Metropolitan statistical area is comprised of Kern County. The county encompasses the Central Valley's southernmost portion. Agriculture and oil extraction are two major contributors to the county's economy. Additionally, there is a significant military, aerospace, and aviation presence, as evidenced by sites like Mojave Air and Space Port, China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station, and Edwards Air Force Base.

This area was inhabited by Native Americans for hundreds of years, including the Chumash and a group of tribes known as the Yokuts. In 1769, Spain annexed the territory. Commander Don Pedro Fages was the first European to enter the region in 1772, coming in through Grapevine Canyon to the south.

In the beginning, mining in the mountains and the desert dominated what would become Kern County. The southeastern portion of Tulare County on the western side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains was transferred to Buena Vista County by the California Assembly in 1855 in an effort to establish a county in the region. Before the enabling law expired in 1859, it was never formally constituted. With the addition of Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties, the southern portion of Tulare County was eventually established as Kern County in 1866. The mining community of Havilah, located in the mountains east of Bakersfield and north of Tehachapi, served as the county's original seat.

The county was given its name after the Walker Pass expedition led by General John C. Frémont in 1845, which crossed the Kern River, which bears his name. Father Francisco Garcés first referred to the Kern River as Rio Bravo de San Felipe during his exploration of the region in 1776.

In Kern County, multiple incidents of ritual sex ring child abuse took place between 1983 and 1986, leading to several lengthy jail terms that were all overturned, some of them decades later, because the prosecution had forced false testimony from the alleged child victims. The 2008 documentary Witch Hunt goes into great depth about these unfounded claims.
