Monterey County

The Monterey County Board of Supervisors is in charge of running Monterey County on a local level. The Monterey County Board of Supervisors is the principal governing body for the unincorporated regions within the County's limits and has legislative and executive jurisdiction over the whole county, as do all governing bodies in California. Each of the five districts is represented by one of the Board's five elected members. The entire county is made up of the five districts when combined.

When California became a state in 1850, Monterey County was one of the state's first counties. In 1874, San Benito County received portions of the county. Tribes from the Ohlone, Salinan, and Esselen were the first people to live in the region.

The Monterey County Sheriff oversees the county's jail operations, court security, and coroner services. It offers detective and patrol services for the county's unincorporated areas. Monterey, Pacific Grove, Salinas, King City, Marina, Seaside, Sand City, and Gonzales are incorporated cities within the county with independent municipal police forces.

Monterey Bay gave the county its name. Sebastián Vizcano gave the bay its name in 1602 in honor of the Viceroy of New Spain at the time, the Conde de Monterrey (or Count of Monterrey). The Conde de Monterrey and his father, the Fourth Count of Monterrei, were both from Monterrei, a municipality in the Galicia area of Spain.
