The Napa Valley was originally explored by Europeans Francis Castro and Father Jose Altimura in 1823. There were six tribes in the valley that spoke several languages and were frequently at war when the first European immigrants came in the early 1830s. In the region where Calistoga was established, the Mayacomos tribe resided. The Callajomans lived close to where the modern town of St. Helena is located. The Kymus lived in the center of the valley farther south. The Soscol tribe lived in the area that currently makes up the southern end of the valley, while the Napa and Ulcus tribes lived in parts of the region where the City of Napa is located today.

During the 1850s through the 1870s, settlers received deeds from the original ranchos following the events of the Mexican-American War, Bear Flag Revolt in 1846, and the Mexican Cession in 1848.
