Tuolumne County

The California Constitution established and defined Tuolumne County's government, which consists of a five-member elected Board of Supervisors with four-year tenure. Elections and voter registration, law enforcement, jails, vital records, property records, tax collection, public health, and social services are just a few of the services that the government offers. All regions that are not incorporated are governed by the Board. In Tuolumne County, Sonora is the only incorporated city.

The county-wide services offered by the Tuolumne County Sheriff include coroner, jail management, and court security. It offers detective and patrol services for the county's unincorporated areas.

Tuolumne was established in 1850 and was one of the first 27 counties in California. Tuolumne was occasionally referred to as Oro County before the counties were given official names by the state. Tuolumne County's original boundaries were not long in coming. The region of Tuolumne County that reached into the San Joaquin Valley on the west was reformed as Stanislaus County in 1854 and 1855. Several of the original counties, including Tuolumne, donated property in 1864, resulting in the creation of Alpine County in the northeast. The current boundaries of Tuolumne County were essentially set with the adoption of the Political Code by the State in 1872, as can be seen in the maps below.
