Amador County

The California Legislature established Amador County on May 11, 1854, by combining portions of Calaveras and El Dorado counties. The organization date is July 3, 1854. Alpine County received a portion of the county's land in 1864. The county is named after José Mara Amador, a soldier, rancher, and miner who was born in San Francisco in 1794. He was the younger brother of Sinforosa Amador and the son of Sergeant Pedro Amador, a Spanish soldier who came in California in 1771.

A five-member elected Board of Supervisors and a County Administrator are in charge of the county. Jackson serves as the county seat. The county sheriff's office, which also runs the county jail and provides court security, patrols Amador County's unincorporated areas. There are local police forces in the counties of Ione, Jackson, and Sutter Creek.

Amador County is situated in the region of California known as the Mother Lode, or Gold Country in the Sierra Nevada, about 45 miles (72 km) southeast of Sacramento. Amador County has an elevation range of about 250 feet (76 meters) in the western part to nearly 9,000 feet (2,700 meters) in the eastern part, with Thunder Mountain being the highest point. The Cosumnes River and El Dorado County border the county on the north, the Mokelumne River and Calaveras County on the south, Sacramento and San Joaquin Counties on the west, and Alpine County on the east.
