Contra Costa County

The bayside alluvial plain, the Oakland Hills and Berkeley Hills, a few inland valleys, and Mount Diablo, an isolated 3,849-foot upthrust peak at the northern extremity of the Diablo Range of hills, make up the majority of Contra Costa County's topography. The Mount Diablo Meridian and Base Line, on which surveys of much of California and western Nevada are based, originate at the summit of Mount Diablo.

The central county cities have also given rise to their own suburbs, which have grown along the county's estuarine north shore and to the east of Bay Point and Pittsburg. Antioch, Oakley, and Brentwood have also experienced significant growth in addition to the older development areas of Pittsburg and Antioch.

From Kensington to Richmond, the Hayward Fault Zone cuts through the county's western region. From Alamo to San Ramon, the Calaveras Fault runs through the southernmost part of the county. The Clayton-Marsh Creek-Greenville Fault extends from Clayton at its northern end to close to Livermore, while the Concord Fault passes through portions of Concord and Pacheco. These strike-slip faults, along with the Diablo thrust fault near Danville, are all thought to be capable of producing earthquakes that are extremely destructive. Additionally, there are numerous smaller related faults in the region that cross important infrastructure, including water, natural gas, and petroleum product pipelines, as well as roads, highways, railroads, and the BART rail system.
