Humboldt County

California's second congressional district, which is represented by Democrat Jared Huffman, includes Humboldt County. In the state legislature, Humboldt is a part of the Democratic Mike McGuire's 2nd Senate District and Democratic Jim Wood's 2nd Assembly District. Since 2008, the county has conducted election audits using a unique method that has caught on elsewhere. In order for candidates and the general public to verify that the official tally is accurate, they scan all ballots and share a file of the photos with a digital signature. They also make software available so that anybody can electronically count the photos. The first time they conducted this, they discovered that 200 ballots were missed by the official program.

The Algic Wiyot and Yurok, the Hokan Karuk, the Athapaskan Hupa, Chilula, Whilkut, and Tsnungwe, as well as the Eel River Athapaskan peoples, which included the Wailaki, Mattole, and Nongatl, were among the first people to live in the region that is now known as Humboldt County. Starting in 1565, the Manila Galleons made unintentional voyages to California on their way back from the Philippines carrying Spanish traders. In 1853, portions of Trinity County were used to create Humboldt County. The Spanish landed in Trinidad in 1775, making it the first arrival by people of European descent that is known to exist.

With extensive coastal and forest ecosystems, Humboldt County is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species. Redwood forests are widely distributed in coastal locations. The toyon, a noticeable understory shrub, has its northernmost extent in Humboldt County.
