The Yurok (Klamath River Indians) and Tolowa Nations of indigenous peoples once lived in what is now known as Del Norte, and they still do. Jedediah Smith, a pioneer in the early 19th century, was the first European American to explore this region. He was the first European American to get there on foot over land during a time when they had no knowledge of such a remote region.

For him, the Pacific Ocean marked "Land's End," the point at which the American continent ceased. At "the battery point," a high tide island off the coast of Crescent City, Congress approved construction of a lighthouse in 1855. This lighthouse is still operational today and serves as a historical site.

Following the great California Gold Rush, a portion of the area of Klamath County was used to create Del Norte County. In 1874, Klamath County as a separate entity vanished.
