Siskiyou County

Siskiyou County, named after the Siskiyou mountain range, was established on March 22, 1852, from portions of Shasta and Klamath Counties. In 1855, Modoc County received a portion of the county's land. The county is the location of the Siskiyou Trail's center segment, which connected California's Central Valley with the Pacific Northwest. Following Native American routes, the Hudson's Bay Company's trappers expanded the Siskiyou Trail in the 1830s. During the California Gold Rush, "Forty-Niners" added to its length.

The word Siskiyou's etymology is unknown. It could be a Cree or Chinook Jargon term for a "bob-tailed horse," as was argued before the State Senate in 1852, or it could be a translation of the French term Six Cailloux (six stones), which was the name Michel Laframboise and his Hudson's Bay Company trappers gave to a ford on the Umpqua River in 1832. Others contend that Stephen Meek, another Hudson's Bay Company trapper who discovered Scott Valley, coined the name Six Cailloux for a crossing of the Klamath River close to Hornbrook.

Geographically, Siskiyou County is diverse. The county is home to renowned trout-fishing rivers and streams like the Sacramento and McCloud rivers, as well as lakes, deep forests, desert, chaparral, and notable waterfalls. Towering Mount Shasta (elev. 14,179 ft/(4,322 m)) is located near the county's center. Lakes and reservoirs, such Castle Lake and Lake Siskiyou, are also scattered throughout the county. A winter sports facility is located on Mount Shasta.
