Modoc County

The California Constitution and laws establish and grant general law county status to Mariposa County's government. The Board of Supervisors, which has both legislative and executive authority, makes up the county government. It is made up of five members who are nonpartisanly elected to four-year staggered terms from each of the county's five distinct districts.

When California became a state in 1850, Mariposa County was one of its first counties. While Mariposa County was initially the largest in the state, over time it lost land that became part of twelve other counties, including all of Merced, Madera, Fresno, Tulare, Kings, and Kern, as well as portions of San Benito, Mono, Inyo, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles. Mariposa County is therefore referred to as the "Mother of Counties".

The county was named after Mariposa Creek, which was given that name by Spanish explorers in 1806, after they found a large group of butterflies (referred to as "mariposas" in Spanish and Portuguese) in the Sierra foothills. Residents hold a festival and parade called "Butterfly Days" to celebrate the yearly arrival of migrating monarch butterflies on the first weekend in May.
