Placer County

For the entirety of Placer County, the Placer County Sheriff's Office provides court security, jail management, and coroner services. In addition to providing patrol, detective, and other police services for the county's unincorporated areas, it also does so under contract for the towns of Loomis and Colfax. The county is governed by a five-person, four-year-term elected board of supervisors, which also appoints the county manager and the administrators of each of its departments.

Through the 1880s, gold mining was a significant industry, but gradually, the newcomers began farming the lush foothill soil, cutting wood, and working for the Southern Pacific Railroad. When Claude Chana found gold in Auburn Ravine in May 1848, the area around Auburn was populated, and it later developed into a hub for exporting supplies to the nearby gold settlements. On July 4, 1894, the cornerstone of Placer's courthouse, which can be seen from Interstate 80 via Auburn, was placed. Courtrooms, a sheriff's office, and the Placer County Museum continue to be housed in the structure, which underwent renovation in the late 1980s.

During the California Gold Rush, hundreds of miners traveled there from all over the world after the discovery of gold in 1848. Additionally, thousands more people arrived to offer the miners goods and services. The rapidly expanding county was created on April 25, 1851, from portions of Sutter and Yuba Counties, with Auburn serving as the county seat. The Spanish phrase for sand or gravel deposits containing gold is whence Placer County gets its name. "Placer mining" is the method by which miners removed the gravel to reveal the heavier gold.
