When California became a state in 1850, Yuba County was one of the state's first counties to be established. In 1851, Nevada County received a portion of the county's land, and in 1852, Sierra County received a portion of the county's land.

Captain John Sutter gave the county its name after the Yuba River in honor of the Maidu hamlet of Yubu, Yupu, or Juba that was located close to the meeting point of the Yuba and Feather rivers. According to General Mariano Vallejo, a Spanish exploration team named the river Uba in 1824 by the abundance of wild grapes (uvas silvestres) they discovered growing on its banks.
