One of the earliest Europeans to notice the Sacramento Valley's agricultural potential was him. The first significant farm in the Central Valley was His Hock Farm, which was founded in 1841 on the Feather River just south of modern-day Yuba City and relied heavily on Native American slave labor to run.

Sutter received the Mexican land grant for Rancho New Helvetia and named his first colony New Helvetia (which included the present day city of Sacramento). After losing his Sacramento assets due to the gold rush in 1850, Sutter moved into retirement at Hock Farm.
