Nevada County

After the mining community of Nevada City, which took its name from the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Nevada County was established in 1851 from parts of Yuba County. Spanish for "snowy" or "covered in snow" is Nevada. Charles Marsh, who was among the earliest inhabitants in the area that would become Nevada City, is possibly responsible for the town's name. He later constructed numerous waterways, ditches, and canals in the region and had a hand in the construction of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad and the first transcontinental railroad.

There are large amounts of woodland, grassland, savanna, riparian region, and other ecosystems throughout the county. Coniferous and oak-dominated woodland types can both be found in forests. There are also lots of forbs and wildflowers in the understory, like the yellow mariposa lily.

The paths of various rivers and the erratically drawn borders between neighboring counties characterize the western portion of the county. The county's founders added a rectangular piece that includes the railroad town of Truckee because they intended to have access to the transcontinental train when they founded the county.
