The Santa Clara County Main Jail Complex is located at 150 West Hedding Street in downtown San Jose and is divided into Main Jail North and Main Jail South. The annual budget for the Main Jail Complex is approximately $37 million dollars. Each year, the Main Jail Complex receives and books about 65,000 persons. Most of those booked are cited and released or post bail on their charges. There are 350 badge and civilian staff assigned to the Main Jail Complex. Santa Clara County

When California became a state in 1850, Santa Clara County was created as one of the original counties. The Ohlone, who lived on Calaveras Creek and Coyote Creek, were among the area's first occupants. Alameda County received a portion of the county's land in 1853. Santa Clara County attempted to tax Southern Pacific Railroad property that was located within county boundaries in 1882. Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad, 118 U.S. 394 (1886), was the outcome, and it established the extension of due-process rights to artificial legal entities.

Five supervisors are chosen within their districts in Santa Clara County. In accordance with California Government Code 23013, the county is one of three in California (together with Napa and Madera) to create a distinct agency to handle incarceration, the Santa Clara County Department of Corrections. The medical facilities and clinics that make up the Santa Clara County Health System are run by the county.

Approximately 6500 high-tech businesses, many of them among the biggest in the world, have their headquarters in Santa Clara County today. These businesses include internet giants eBay, Google, and Yahoo! as well as hardware manufacturers AMD, Nvidia, Cisco Systems, and Intel. The majority of what is regarded as Silicon Valley is located within the county, however several neighboring tech hubs in San Mateo (home to Facebook, for example), Alameda, and Santa Cruz counties are also included.
